Andrés Martínez Reynoso, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), surprised by revealing that the opening of the Tulum airport has boosted circuits, with tourists entering through Tulum and leaving through Cancún airport or vice versa, which allows them to get closer to southern destinations such as Mahahual, Chetumal and Bacalar.
“We have new products, the Tulum International Airport has been a huge success, it completely changes the geography of how we saw the State from within because now we are starting to see circuits that we didn’t have, that is, they enter through an airport, through Cancun and return through Tulum, and that allows them to get to know more destinations, which is what the Tulum airport has created, and it has brought the southern destinations of Mahahual, Chetumal, Bacalar closer to tourists who normally vacationed in the north,” he commented to Caribe Empresarial.
He also highlighted that the Tulum airport has been operating for eight months and that since January airlines have already been operating new routes, as it has not taken any from other airports such as Cancun or Chetumal.
“By January, all the national airlines were operating: Viva, Volaris, Aeromexico, Mexicana. By February, the airport was opened to international airlines. We started with American Airlines. It’s the first time they’ve opened a tourist destination with four Flights on the same day. That same day, in the afternoon, the Delta Flight arrived. The following week, we were opening the Houston Flight with United. A couple of weeks later, the Canadians arrived. Air Canada arrived with three Flights also on the same day. The following week, Jetblue arrived from New York. Then, Copa arrived, connecting all of Latin America from Panama. Our Flight from Europe to Frankfurt with the Lufthansa group is already scheduled. They’re going to operate it with Discovery. So, it’s an airport that’s had tremendous success. It’s important to say that all of these Flights have been new Flights. No Flights have been taken away from any airport,” Martínez Reynoso assured the same media outlet.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxDelta recently announced that starting January 11, 2025, it will operate Flights from Detroit to Tulum Airport. The airline reported that in addition to the existing service from Atlanta and Minneapolis, it will offer 10 weekly Flights from the United States to Tulum, four of them on Saturdays. (Tulum: Delta will fly from Detroit along with Atlanta and Minneapolis).
Delta announced the frequency to Tulum as part of its announcement of new options for flying to Mexico this winter, which also includes routes from Los Angeles to Mazatlán.
