The Secretariat of Ecology and Environment indicated that there are already two companies with permits for the industrialization of sargassum, which convert it into products such as cosmetics, paints or construction materials.

Likewise, two other companies would be in the process of acquiring permits to manufacture products with sargassum, since Huggette Hernández, director of the Secretariat, pointed out that production was encouraged once the Comprehensive Strategy for the Management and Use of Sargassum was published. (EIMAS).

Hernández stated that the two companies that have the permits are already marketing their products in department stores. He also said that EIMAS “clearly defines standards and parameters for the use of this algae, which contains high levels of arsenic that must be considered when transforming it either into biofuel or construction materials, or even in the disposal process.” final”, as reported by El Economista.

On the other hand, since 2023 they have been working with a Dutch company that is interested in producing energy based on sargassum, although the project depends on the massive arrival of the macroalgae since a large quantity would be needed.

As reported REPORTUR.mx, through the Global Gateway, the European Union (EU) and its member states seek to contain the impact of sargassum in the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean countries by importing the macroalgae to be used as raw material for the textile industry. The European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, pointed out at the time that it is a great initiative to turn sargassum “into an economic opportunity” and added that they are talking to governments and private companies to support innovative ideas that take advantage of sargassum, as she considers that its use in the textile industry is only one of its applications.
