Commercial flights resumed this Monday at the Port-au-Prince airport, after being closed for nearly three months due to the chaotic situation in the country, with armed gangs spreading terror.
The airlines Amerijet and Sunrise were the first to land at the facilities, marking the beginning of the return to normality at the capital’s main airport, where dozens of travelers could be seen.
Before the reopening, numerous security measures were taken at Toussaint Louverture airport, including the reinforcement of surveillance at the entrances and the destruction of several hundred country houses located in the surrounding area and used as hideouts by armed gangs.
The action of the armed gangs, which took up positions around the airport, led in March to suspend the activity of commercial flights, which have maintained operations at the Cap Haitien airport, in the north of the country.
Haiti is awaiting the imminent arrival of the first troops of the multinational security support mission, led by Kenya and with the aim of restoring order in the country.
