José Chapur, president of The Palace Company, spoke to Notivision in an unusual setting surrounded by protesters, where he referred to the security and guarantees that Quintana Roo offers to investors.
Amidst the protesters’ harangues, he pointed out that “we are seeing that if there are investments, they do not stop, Quintana Roo is growing,” said Chapur. He added that there are new Hotel investments in the north of Cozumel, and he also mentioned the renovations that are being done to their hotels on the island.
He also spoke about the Environmental Sanitation tax, which they are paying because “it was established for the sargassum and surely the trust can use it for other sanitation issues,” said Chapur.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxIn June, Chapur proposed addressing beach erosion by reactivating or opening a new trust fund with the tax revenue charged to hoteliers for using the federal zone. (Chapur proposes that hoteliers pay for beach erosion.)
Chapur considered that the problem must be addressed in an integrated manner and that it is not convenient to make individual efforts because they affect the beach area of other hotels. “They are not always the most appropriate. Because if I do a project for my Hotel front, I am harming the neighbors. And what I gain on the beach is eaten up by the neighbor. So it is important that they are not individual solutions, but rather general ones for the area,” said Chapur at the time.
