Águeda Esperilla Soto, a representative of Uber drivers in Cancún, said that the conditions that the state government has put forward in its attempts to regulate the platform are absurd, such as special licenses.
Likewise, Espriella Soto said that the service has not been regulated because the government has not wanted it. “The Uber service has not been regulated because the state government has not wanted it, the demands it is asking for are difficult, they are absurd, they are illegal, and they are so illegal that Uber has filed for protection.”
He explained that the state government cannot “do anything” against Uber due to the injunction issued in 2023 by the Third Collegiate Court of the Twenty-Seventh Circuit, which established in the ruling that “the transportation laws in Quintana Roo are unconstitutional and cannot be applied to Uber, since it is a private and not a public service.”
He also pointed out that Uber has formalized agreements with the state government and taxi unions. “So, I don’t understand why they are coming out with this now,” referring to the taxi drivers’ demonstration in front of the Municipal Palace of Cancun, which is why they fear an increase in attacks.
“If this were the case, the protection of the authorities with the union would be evident again, because they have no reason to attack us, because of all the attacks we suffered, not a single one was resolved. (…) So, if now the taxi drivers were to return to the same thing, we would continue to expose, denounce and call attention,” concluded Espriella Soto.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxthe Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (Amatur) recently expressed its fear that the image of the destination among tourists could be damaged due to roadblocks by transporters against Uber. (Agencies in Cancun: Uber blockades damage the image of the destination).
Amatur asked transport companies to avoid continuing with the blockades, as they are affecting the main roads and considers that tourists are free to choose the transport that is regulated and has the necessary permits to Travel.
