Three members of the National Guard in Mexico were arrested on Thursday accused of raping a teenager on a beach in Isla Mujeres, in the state of Quintana Roo. According to a first report from the State Attorney General’s Office, the three individuals were arrested in the continental area of the tourist destination, and were identified as Bernabé Caín “N”, Ulises “N” and Guadalupe Rodrigo “N”.
According to local media, the teenager was with her partner on the beach when a man threatened them and then a second defendant subdued the couple and then abused the minor. The couple even offered money to the agents, but it was not enough to prevent the attack, according to the same sources.
“Following the complaint filed with the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Sexual Crimes and the Free Development of Personality, this social representation opened an investigation file, for which it requested and granted a control judge the arrest warrant against the three subjects,” said the state Prosecutor’s Office.
In recent days, other elements of the federal security force have been linked to various crimes. The first of these was a homicide committed in León (Guanajuato) and the second was an attack on a family in San Luis Potosí, where a 9-year-old girl died.
The National Guard has also been the subject of controversy in recent months due to the reforms planned by the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), who wants them to be under the command of the Ministry of Defense (Sedena). He hopes that this will give them sufficient resources and military training to confront crime. But this transfer of ownership has been surrounded by intense criticism from the opposition, which prefers that they be a civilian body as the Constitution now dictates.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, At the beginning of July, it was estimated that more than two million tourists would arrive to Quintana Roo destinations for the summer season, which has already begun and will end on August 25. In addition, an average economic impact of USD 2 billion is expected. (QRoo: security will be key in a year of great benefits from tourism).
