For reasons that are still unknown, a luxury yacht named “Dominic” that was anchored in the bay of Isla Mujeres burned completely before the astonished gaze of dozens of people who helplessly watched the tongues of fire that quickly consumed the boat.
The rapid response of the Navy, the company Ultramar, Apiqroo, personnel from the municipality of Isla Mujeres and the solidarity of the citizens, allowed the safe evacuation of all the occupants of the luxury yacht, including six tourists.
The events took place after 7:00 pm on Friday, July 26, when islanders and tourists from the mainland observed how a dense cloud of smoke began to rise from a yacht-type vessel anchored in the bay, at the entrance to the sheltered port, in front of the Comején restaurant.
The crew of a boat sailing in the area were the first to notice the incipient flames coming from inside the yacht, which apparently originated in the lower part of the boat. According to witnesses, a couple of explosions were heard caused by the fuel tanks exploding, although this could not be confirmed at first.
A ship from the Ultramar shipping company was quickly dispatched to provide support while the emergency teams arrived. Minutes later, a Navy vessel arrived, followed by civil protection personnel and firefighters with the fire truck, but there was not much that could be done to save the yacht, which was completely burned by the flames.
