The Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres (AHCPM&IM) relaunched its Environmental Committee, with the aim of strengthening actions in sustainability and environmental management within the Hotel industry. They seek to effectively address the most urgent environmental challenges, such as beach erosion, sargassum management and the reduction of plastic use.
Under the direction of biologist Antonio Ortiz, this committee will seek to gather detailed information on sustainability programs at partner hotels to identify key environmental challenges.
Ortiz, who is also the corporate environmental manager at The Palace Company, highlighted the importance of this committee as a key space for the exchange of knowledge and experiences on sustainability issues. Since 2020, the committee has been a platform for environmental management managers at the associated hotels to collaborate and share good practices.
Ortiz explained that the first step in this relaunch will be the collection of information on those responsible for sustainability in each Hotel. This diagnosis will allow us to identify those responsible for environmental management and to know their training and experience, which is essential to effectively address the most urgent environmental challenges, such as beach erosion, sargassum management and the reduction of plastic use.
Ortiz stressed that while there is still much work to be done, it is encouraging to see a growing commitment by hotels to integrate sustainability at strategic levels of the organization. Data collection will include details on how many people are dedicated to sustainability areas, their locations and operational levels within Hotel companies.
