Hoteliers in Cancun have asked the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), headed by Andrés Martínez Reynoso, for another strategy to promote destinations in the northern part of the state, given the great disappointment they experienced with occupancy rates below 70% during the summer, which represented drops of up to 15 points.
“We had summers with 90% occupancy, and now we must work on more promotion to attract more visitors, so that the other seasons are positive and this leads to having more tourism,” said Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres.
Almaguer also pointed out that several situations had an influence, including Hurricane Beryl, sporting events such as the Olympic Games and the Copa América football tournament, which is why he believes more promotion should be done.
He added that it is necessary to recover the levels that they usually achieved during this season, which is why the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council has stated that they must look for other strategies to attract markets, since the competition maintains the promotion to attract tourists.
Rival countries in the Mexican Caribbean have been launching strong advertising campaigns, and hoteliers also pointed out that there are new competitors, trends, and especially the United States, the main market, which is investing in promotional campaigns to attract domestic tourism.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxThe Tulum Hotel Association also indicated that the drop in occupancy this summer for Tulum and in general for the Mexican Caribbean, is due to the lack of promotion and the drop in the number of Flights that arrived, due to the problems with Boeing and Airbus planes. (Tulum: Hotel occupancy drop is due to lack of promotion).
The Great Costa Maya, made up of Chetumal, Bacalar and Mahahual, have barely managed to fill half of their hotels this summer season with more than two thousand unoccupied rooms, a disappointment, since they projected reaching 80% occupancy (Great disappointment south of QRoo due to low Hotel occupancy).
Andrés Martínez Reynoso had pointed out about a month ago, as reported REPORTUR.mxthat the evolution of Quintana Roo will be to go from being the best sun and beach destination in the world, to being the best sun, beach and entertainment destination in the world (Criticisms of the CPTQ: Cozumel or Holbox, far from entertainment).
However, this focus on concentrating the promotion of the destination on entertainment is concentrated in the largest destinations in the state, such as Cancun and Riviera Maya, which have nearby leisure offerings, unlike others such as Holbox or Cozumel, whose appeal is based on sun and beach, so there are doubts about this strategy that favors the large destinations in the state, to the detriment of those with lesser fame of its brand.
