Several groups of taxi drivers and tourist transporters from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum plan to block the main access roads to the Cancun International Airport this weekend, in protest against the operation of Uber and other digital platforms.

The mobilization will begin this Saturday at 10 a.m. Drivers will block the main roads in downtown Cancun and Playa del Carmen, as well as in the Hotel zone, which converge with the route to Cancun International Airport.

The Mexican Association of Tourist Transporters of Quintana Roo (Amtranstur) said that the objective of the demonstration is to demand that the regulations that allow transporters to operate at the airport be respected, and at the same time reject the presence of services such as Uber, InDrive, Didi and Cabify.

According to the call, there is no set time for lifting the blockades, so taxi drivers and transporters have been asked to come prepared with water, comfortable clothing and sun protection, anticipating a long day.

In fact, some hotels in the area have had to warn their guests to take precautions on the roads and highways, Laverdad reports.

For its part, the Mexican Association of Incoming Tourism Agencies (Amatur) recently stated that it fears that the image of the destination will be damaged among tourists, due to roadblocks by transporters against Uber, as reported REPOTUR.us (Cancun agencies: Uber blockades damage the destination’s image).
