Nearly half of the taxi drivers registered on the new digital platform of the “Andrés Quintana Roo” Taxi Drivers Union of Cancún were operating dirty and old taxis, despite the requirements of both the application and the mobility law itself establishing that they be recent units.
Rubén Carrillo, secretary of the Taxi Drivers Union, acknowledged that for this reason they recently had to deregister 300 of these taxis for failing to comply with the requirements. Currently, there are only 500 units left on the digital platform.
According to the union’s figures, the application started with a total of 800 taxi drivers; however, hundreds of them were driving old, deteriorated vehicles or vehicles that did not even have air conditioning or other amenities. “We started with 800 units that were registered in the application, however, due to the purge, due to different circumstances, there are now 500 left,” explained Carrillo.
The app was launched in the first quarter of this year as part of the union’s 50th anniversary and thus be able to compete against the apps that are already operating in the destination, such as Uber and DiDi. According to Carrillo, the union’s platform has had good acceptance so far, which is why it is important to keep the units in good condition and, above all, that the drivers offer an excellent service, since that is what will make the difference.
