There is no progress with electronic visas for Brazilian tourists despite the announcement that it would be in May when they would be available again, acknowledged the State Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto and Lilian Zanon, honorary consul of Brazil in the city.
“There is no progress, we still have no news. We are very aware that this could happen and we will be reporting it,” acknowledged Bernardo Cueto.
In August 2022, the Mexican authorities suspended the issuance of digital or electronic visas and resumed the in-person visa but only in some of the main cities in Brazil, which had a severe impact and caused a drastic drop in the arrival of visitors from that country.
For Lilian Zanon, honorary consul of Brazil, the delays in the issuance of the electronic visa put the next strong season of Brazilian tourism at risk, since they could choose to book in other Caribbean destinations instead of Quintana Roo.
The honorary consul recalled that since the electronic visa was suspended, destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, especially Cancun, have experienced considerable economic losses.
The procedure has not yet been made official by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but the regulations for issuing the visa have already been published in the Official Gazette, which indicates that its implementation could be close but still without a definitive date.
As reported REPORTUR.mx, hoteliers in Quintana Roo have reached losses of around US$400 million as a result of the drop in Brazilian tourists. Jesús Almaguer, president of the Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, pointed out that this is a consequence of not providing a solution to electronic visas.
