The proposal to promote greater participation of women in aviation will be one of the central topics to be discussed at the Twelfth Meeting of Directors of Civil Aviation of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, which began in Belize, Central America, under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
In this regard, the general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Hector Porcellawho heads the DR delegation at the meeting, reported that a multidisciplinary panel will explore how to encourage greater interest from women in the aeronautical sector.
The aim of the panel is to identify criteria and policies to ensure that women are competitive and do not face barriers in the hiring process, which also involves identifying structural obstacles that may limit their advancement in aviation.
According to Porcella, the panel responsible for this proposal should conclude with recommendations on the measures that participating countries should adopt to promote a more equitable participation of women in the aviation industry.
She said that in the last four years the Dominican Republic has taken important steps to raise the role of women in civil aviation, including the appointment, for the first time in the history of IDAC, of a woman as Director of Air Navigation, one of the most responsible technical positions within the institution.
Porcella referred to the architect and air traffic controller Claudia Beatriz Roa Ochoawho joined Idac in 1996 and has a master’s degree in Air Transport Management and National Security and a diploma in Air Transport Economics.
She indicated that the Idac currently has five outstanding professional women as sector directors, the highest number that this governing body of civil aviation has had since its creation.
Is about Bernarda Franco, Legal Director; Sarah Estévez, Director of Planning and Development; Clara Fernández, Director of the Academy of Aeronautical Sciences; Ana Ysa Tejeda, Director of Human Resources; and Claudia Beatriz Ochoa, Director of Air Navigation.
The Dominican delegation also included, along with Porcella, the general director of the Specialized Corps of Airport Security and Civil Aviation (Cesac), Floreal Suarez and by the Dominican Ambassador to the ICAO, Julio Pena.
