The president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores), David Llibreshowed its support for the proposal of tax refunds to tourists made by the Economic and Social Development Council of Santo Domingo (CODESSD), stating that the institution he heads is working on this issue.
He explained that with this initiative they are seeking to stimulate purchases and consumption by visitors to the country.
CODESSD is proposing that the tax reform include the elimination of the Tax on Transfers of Industrialized Goods and Services (ITBIS) for tourists visiting this territory.
Well, according to the entity that he presides over Samuel SenaThe measure would allow consumer tourism, which is not currently arriving, to begin arriving in the country, which in the end results in more benefits.
In this regard, Llibre said that “what we want is that when visitors arrive, they impact the entire sector and the economy (…) in many islands when cruise ships arrive, people buy clothes and jewelry, things that do not happen in the Dominican Republic, simply because they know they will get their tax refunded.”
He said that the facility does not exist in the country and “it is not being spent,” so there would be no fiscal sacrifice, according to the radio program “El Rumbo de la Mañana.”
Addressing the issue of the development model in the Dominican Republic, he also stated that the country has been developing the tourism sector in a more organized manner, using Miches, Pedernales and Puerto Plata as examples.
He added that “there are still many pending projects to be done and many improvements and infrastructures, which if not done by the public sector, must be undertaken by the private sector, they cannot be forgotten.”
He stated that after the Covid-19 pandemic, the Dominican Republic was one of the first countries to open its doors and offer a safe destination, which generated significant growth, allowing the American and South American markets to have a greater presence by adding new air routes.
