On August 20, the European Commission will announce its decision on the purchase of Air Europa by the IAG group, parent company of Iberia, with the proposal to deliver 53,705 Flights of the Globalia company to six airlines that it has already selected.
If the European authority does not set another deadline or new “stop the clock”, Iberia with the latest offer would be willing to give up 52% of Air Europa’s business, which corresponds to the 53,705 mentioned, according to Aena data consulted by Preferentialoperated a total of 103,279 in 2023.
Iberia hopes that this proposal will be sufficient to obtain approval from Brussels and, in that case, it has chosen six airlines to be responsible for the operation of these Flights, including Avianca, World2Fly and Iberojet for long-haul Flights, as well as Binter, Ryanair and Volotea for short and medium-haul Flights.
As reported by REPORTUR.us, Avianca has the handicap of being a foreign airline. It has recovered financially after emerging from Chapter 11 and has 12 long-haul Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, the same model used by Air Europa. It is also part of the Abra group, which has Wamos Air with 13 A330s and hopes to reach 15 by 2025. (Iberia-Air Europa chose Avianca, Iberojet and W2Fly to cede routes to them.)
Iberojet operates six aircraft for transatlantic routes, including two A350-900s, two A3300-900Neos and two A330-300s. Finally, World2Fly operates three A350-900s and two A330-300s.
