The president Luis Abinader led the signing of Covenant National for the Road Safety together with representatives of 121 public and private entitieswith the aim of saving lives with the implementation of comprehensive strategies to reduce the traffic accidents and its tragic consequences in the country.

The executive director of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (Intrant)Milton Morrison, explained a series of measures that will be implemented from 2025, of which he highlighted the inclusion in the school curriculum of the road educationthe creation of a patrol network on highways and urban roads, in addition to the digitization of traffic fines.

“Additionally, starting January 1, 2025, every driver who does not have a violation will receive a discount when you go to renew your driver licensewith the aim of rewarding those who do well,” he said yesterday at the National Palace.

Morrison also announced the creation of a Department of Attention to Victims of Traffic Accidentswhere it will be provided support legal and psychological to the families of the victims and those injured by road accidents.

Other points revolve around the implementation of the reforms of the points license and the vehicle technical inspection (ITV), the promotion of public-private collaboration, in addition to the creation of the National Plan for the Road Safety 2025-2030.

For this pact, the result of two months of work, the Intrant socialized the document that consists of 29 pointsthe more than 140 proposals, recommendations and suggestions presented by 300 people from various sectors and geographical areas, translating into more than 200 hours of work and 50 in-person and virtual meetings.

Declaration of high national interest

President Luis Abinader signed this Monday the Decree 656-24, which declares of high interest the road safety throughout the country and that establishes the process of elaboration and implementation of the National Plan of Road Safety 2025-2030, with Intrant as the coordinating body.

President Abinader regretted that “historically traffic accidents take more lives than the pandemic Covid” with a total of 26,257 people affected in the last eight years (2016-2024) in the country, with Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays being the days with the highest number of cases recorded.

Private sector

He private sector was represented by the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), National Association of Herrera Companies and Industries (Aneih), Employers’ Confederation of the Dominican Republic (Copardom), the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (Asonahores) and the Dominican Chamber of Insurers and Reinsurers (Cadoar).
