Until next Sunday, October 20, citizens will have the opportunity to enjoy the National Plant and Flower Festivalorganized by the Botanical garden National, an entity that highlighted as a novelty for the 18th edition of the event the participation of more than 100 companies.

“The time has come for our party with nature,” said the director of the Botanical gardenPedro Suárez, during the opening ceremony of the fair, where he highlighted that nurseries, florists and orchid gardens are part of the festival participants.

Suárez reminded those interested in attending the event that “they will be able to purchase a large number of plants at fair prices.” Admission costs 150 pesos for adults and RD$75 for children, according to what was reported by the organizers.

Maridalia Tejeda, in charge of the Protocol and Events Division, explained during her speech that other novelties of the festival include a cinema on the grass, a mini zoo and a children’s area.

Activities

The organizers of the festival indicated that, during the four days, a series of talks will be given at no additional cost to all attendees. “Toxic Plants Used in Residential Gardens” is one of the conferences, given today, Thursday, by the person in charge of the Botanical Herbarium, Elizabeth Séptimo.

When offering details about the talk, Séptimo indicated that there are toxic, poisonous and stinging plants (they cause itching) that are planted in homes and that present some compound that can affect adults, children and animals.

He gave as an example the case of cherry trees, “those plants have little hairs that cannot be seen with the naked eye, but they cause allergies.” The specialist clarified that these species can be kept in homes, as long as due care is taken.

Within the framework of the Festival, the conferences will be presented: “Mangroves, an ecosystem between two worlds and a natural solution to climate change”, “Green Infrastructures in Urban Areas: Technological Solutions to Promote Biodiversity and Potentialize Real Estate Value”, “De Pre-Bonsai to Bonsai”, “Care and Maintenance of orchids” and “Pests and Diseases, How Do I Control Them?”
