If the five-peso increase requested by transporters in Quintana Roo is approved, Cancun would become the beach destination with the second most expensive public transport service in Mexico, only below the Baja California peninsula.
With the increase being analyzed, the rate in Cancun would go from 10 pesos in the urban area to 15 pesos; while in the tourist area it would go to 17 pesos. In Acapulco, the authorized rate for urban buses and public transport vehicles is 12 pesos; while in Puerto Vallarta, the cost is 9.50 pesos. In Riviera Nayarit, the price is 10 pesos.
In Huatulco, Oaxaca, although the cost for taxis can vary between 30 and 45 pesos, if compared to the rate of taxi drivers in Cancun, which is 37 pesos but is charged at 50, the municipality of Benito Juarez has this service more expensive.
The above does not take into account the minimum rate to the Hotel zone, which in the first kilometers and up to the nightclub zone, taxi drivers charge between 150 and 200 pesos during the day, and 200 to 300 pesos at night; and to get to the airport the price ranges between 250 and 300 pesos one way, since if you take a taxi back to the city the price ranges from 600 to 1600 pesos (84 dollars).
Possible changes to public transport fares are sparking a debate about the accessibility and sustainability of transport costs in a city that attracts millions of tourists every year. The concessionaire companies, without revealing the basis for their study – since many units are in poor condition – claim that it costs them 18.50 pesos per user to provide the service, which is why they say it is not profitable.
