The Director of Tourism Innovation, Education and Investment of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Lopez from Avilastressed that the country can become a smart tourist destination, that is, an offer based on the use of technology.
“Today there is still no smart destination in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic could be the first country to be a smart tourist destination in the region,” he said.
He said that a technology-based offer generates data through big data and artificial intelligence and analyses the data to improve the management of the territory and offer a better experience to non-resident foreigners. Therefore, transforming the tourist offer means starting to make decisions based on statistics and data, the results of which will be able to control and measure environmental, social and economic sustainability in real time.
However, the director understands that this would mean that the country would face the high costs of its implementation to adapt its digital infrastructure.
“These policies depend heavily on skilled labor and significant investments, but they will allow the country to develop,” he said, according to Acento.
In addition, for López de Ávila, the country is in a strategic position to attract foreign direct investment, enjoys political stability and has a solid economy, “main axes of interest.”
